2008 AP® Test Fee Reimbursement Grant – Deadline: December 15, 2008

 <information>

The Louisiana Department of Education's Louisiana Virtual School recently received a three year $999,291.00 U.S. Department of Education Advanced Placement Incentive Program Grant (APIP). U.S. Department of Education APIP grants can be used for teacher training, curriculum development, books, supplies and other activities directly related to expanding participation in AP courses for low-income students. The Grant will fund the "Louisiana Advanced Placement Academy" (LA AP Academy). The project will be a joint effort of the Louisiana Department of Education (LDE) and Louisiana State University (LSU). The Advanced Placement (AP) and Pre-AP programs offered by the LA AP Academy will annually target 36 English, Mathematics, and Science teachers from 9 different middle and high schools serving 4,755 students from across Louisiana.

The LA AP Academy will:

offer Pre-AP courses, AP Calculus-AB, AP English Literature, and AP Biology through the Louisiana Virtual School;

offer intensive, three-year AP professional development and support programs assisting schools to implement and sustain vertically aligned Pre-AP/AP programs for all their students;

provide substantial support to the participating schools to design and implement sustainable "stand-alone" AP and Pre-AP programs in English, Mathematics, and Biology; and;

provide model programs for rural, inner-city, and suburban school districts that can be scaled up to expand open access to strong AP & Pre-AP programs across all of Louisiana

In fiscal year 2005-06, the Louisiana Virtual School (LVS) will provide low-income students the opportunity to have AP exam fees reimbursed through a U.S. Department of Education Advanced Placement Test Fee Program grant. The grant provides a great opportunity for students to have their AP exam fee reimbursed. Therefore, we request that all principals encourage teachers and guidance counselors to make a special effort to promote this program with low-income students.

With funding from the Advanced Placement Test Fee Program, the Louisiana Department of Education (LDE) will reimburse $60 for each Advanced Placement exam taken by students enrolled in public or BESE-approved nonpublic schools who meet the definition of low-income or who attend a school with a "high concentration" of low income students. The term "low-income student" is defined as a student who is eligible for free or reduced price lunches under the National School Lunch Act, a student in a family receiving assistance under Part A of Title IV of the Social Security Act, or a student eligible to receive medical assistance under the Medicaid program under Title XIX of the Social Security Act. The term "high concentration of low-income students" used with respect to a school is defined as a school that serves a student population containing 40 percent or more low-income individuals.

The College Board projects that the fee for each AP exam taken in May 2006 will be $82. Low-income students should receive a fee reduction of $22 per exam from the College Board; the Louisiana Department of Education will reimburse the difference at a rate of $60 per exam.

The 2005-06 application deadline has passed. Year 2006-07 AP information will be posted in August 2006.
